Sander and Virginia’s passion for smart home lighting was born in 2017 when Sander had bought 2 colored lightbulbs from an online marketplace that each had their own apps. It was already a profound step forward to be able to turn a light on and off from a different room, but he noticed that switching between the two apps was a lot of back and forth.
When looking for a way to control both lightbulbs at once, he came across the Open Source software Home Assistant - a convenient companion to quickly control smart-home devices. Installing Home Assistant opened them up to a world of interconnectivity in the home, and after 7 short years of building and troubleshooting, their smart home grew to include:
| 15 smart lightbulbs | 3 smart-switches |
| 6 smart-plugs | 3 outdoor spotlights |
| 5 LED light strips | 2 wall-tablets |
| 3 security cameras | 1 motion sensor |
The best part: these are all accessed using a single app on his phone, with no monthly costs, super snappy response times, and endless expansion opportunities!
Due to Sander's diligence in learning a new software platform and two new computer languages (JSON and YAML), and Virginia’s awesome ability to transform a user interface into a beautiful visualisation of our livingroom, we succeeding in creating a smart home layout that completely transformed our house - on a budget! We knew that many of our friends and family would be interested in having a similar setup, but they may not want (or have the time) to build this from scratch. That is where we come in! We have taken diligent notes on how to streamline all that we have learned over the past 7 years into a quick turn-around time for our customers!
We are not affiliated with Home Assistant, but we see the power and beauty in its open source platform and ever growing base of integrations! If you feel like tinkering, I highly recommend you look into Home Assistant yourself and join this awesome Open Source Smart Home Revolution!
Lumos Home Automation focuses on offering consultation and installation of smart home technology. We begin by installing the Home Assistant operating system on a little computer the size of a wallet. This is the brain of your smart home and, as such, processes all smart-home related requests. It is only accessible inside your home's wifi network, so it is secure from outside hackers.
After the Raspberry pi is installed in your network via wifi or ethernet, we then move on to installing the other devices compatible with Home Assistant such as the smart lightbulbs, LED strips, motion sensors, etc.
Finally- once everything is installed, we then build a quick user-interface to get you started with. If you are interested in having your very own hand-illustrated home layout done by Virginia, we can do that for you too! (* for an extra cost)
Our goal is to share this awesome technology with our neighbors here in Phoenix. It is so rewarding when we discover a new way to present our rooms with just a simple lighting update!
